RESS 3 Deadlines Extended: Supporting Renewable Energy Progress

Priscila Mc Geehan

The Irish Solar Energy Association (ISEA) acknowledges the recent extension of key deadlines under the Renewable Electricity Support Scheme 3 (RESS 3). This move provides developers with additional time to navigate the administrative and logistical challenges of delivering critical renewable energy projects that contribute to Ireland’s climate and energy goals.

What Are the New Deadlines?

  1. Grid Connection Agreement Deadline: Originally set for 31 October 2024, the deadline has been extended to 28 February 2025.

  2. Planning Permission Deadline: Previously scheduled for 31 December 2024, this has been extended to 31 May 2025.

These extensions provide developers with an extra four months to secure grid connection agreements and an additional five months to obtain finalised planning permission.

Why the Extension Matters

RESS 3 is an essential component of Ireland’s Renewable Electricity Support Scheme, targeting the deployment of large-scale renewable energy projects. However, developers have faced delays in securing necessary permits and navigating the grid connection process due to factors like administrative bottlenecks and grid access constraints.

"The deadline extensions for RESS 3 are a practical response to the challenges faced by developers. This additional time helps to ensure that projects are not unnecessarily stalled, supporting Ireland's renewable energy ambitions and maintaining momentum toward our climate goals." - Conall Bolger, CEO of ISEA

What’s Next for Developers?

Developers should use this extension to address any outstanding issues, ensuring that their projects meet the new deadlines and remain on track. With these adjustments, the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications (DECC) aims to balance project delivery with realistic timelines, providing a smoother path to implementation.

Further Information

ISEA remains committed to advocating for a supportive policy framework that facilitates the timely and efficient deployment of renewable energy projects across Ireland.
