The great solar farm debate

ISEA CEO Conall Bolger spoke to Niall Hurson of the Irish Independent on the opportunities that solar farms present to farmers in Ireland.


Mr Bolger pointed out that by 2030 solar farms will consume just one fifth of 1pc of all agricultural land in Ireland, which is “about half of the area which is under golf courses,” he said.


“The high-level takeaway is it doesn’t really displace a lot of land from pure agricultural use as we currently understand it.


“The Department of Agriculture even has a scale for ranking the land use and solar cohabitation. Really there’s a good opportunity in there for agriculture, particularly for farmers looking for revenue diversification in challenging economic times.
