Driving Solar Forward: Insights from the SEAI Energy in Ireland 2024 Report

Priscila Mc Geehan

Ireland is at a crucial juncture in its journey toward a sustainable energy future. The recently published SEAI Energy in Ireland 2024 report celebrates notable achievements, with solar energy shining as a beacon of progress. However, the report also underscores the urgency for more decisive and accelerated actions across all sectors.

Increasing the volume of energy derived from electricity is a clear priority for unlocking the energy transition. 2023 was the first year in which fossil fuel generation accounted for less than half of Ireland’s gross electricity supply.

Solar Energy: A Breakthrough Year

2023 was a remarkable year for solar energy in Ireland. Generation from solar photovoltaic (PV) systems increased by an incredible 335%. This surge was largely driven by the connection of new utility-scale solar farms, with two-thirds of solar power now coming from these larger installations. The rapid growth of solar PV highlights its potential to complement Ireland’s leading renewable source, wind energy. Together, these technologies are pivotal in reducing Ireland's dependence on fossil fuels and smoothing seasonal variations in energy supply.

The Importance of Supporting Homeowners

Despite the impressive growth in solar PV, homeowners continue to face challenges. While SEAI’s report showcases national achievements, solar PV grants for homeowners are being reduced, threatening to slow the adoption of this critical renewable technology. The ISEA has been actively advocating for the grant levels to be maintained, emphasising that continued support is vital for maintaining momentum and enabling more Irish households to invest in solar energy.

Broader Renewable Energy Achievements

Renewables accounted for 14.1% of Ireland’s primary energy in 2023, the highest level to date. Wind and solar continued to drive this progress, contributing to the country’s record 15.3% renewable energy share overall. Despite these advancements, Ireland's renewable energy adoption remains among the lowest in Europe, highlighting the need for more ambitious efforts.

SEAI’s Highlights: Supporting the Transition

SEAI’s work in 2024 showcases the immense potential of collaboration between government, businesses, and citizens:

  • 54,000 home energy upgrades, supported with €420 million, including upgrades for over 7,700 homes in energy poverty.

  • €62 million in grants to over 3,500 businesses for energy efficiency projects.

  • Over €52 million invested in supporting 12,000 electric vehicles (EVs) and 15,400 residential EV chargers.

  • €22 million awarded to 42 innovative energy research projects, fostering new technologies and solutions.

  • €61 million capital funding allocated for public sector building upgrades, alongside the signing of 87 new public sector partnerships.

  • Launch of a Business Energy Upgrade Scheme, streamlining support for commercial energy improvements.

Scaling Solar: The Path Forward

Solar energy represents a cornerstone of Ireland’s energy transition strategy. By prioritising rooftop solar for homes, businesses, and community projects, alongside utility-scale developments, Ireland can accelerate its decarbonisation. Strong policies, streamlined grants, and community engagement will be critical in achieving our 43% renewable energy target by 2030. Ensuring that solar PV grants are not only maintained but expanded will play a pivotal role in this effort.

SEAI's report demonstrates what is possible with concerted effort and government support. By building on successes, we can make solar energy and other renewables the foundation of a cleaner, more sustainable Ireland.

The progress outlined in SEAI's report is promising, but we must not lose momentum. Whether you're a homeowner, business leader, or policymaker, there’s a role for everyone in Ireland's energy transition. Let’s work together and advocate to reinstate full solar PV grants for homeowners, scale up our delivery of our renewable ambitions, and ensure that 2025 is remembered as the tipping point for transformative action.

Be part of the solution. Join the solar revolution. Embrace solar.
